Surgical Site Infections
The NYSPFP initiative to reduce Surgical Site Infections (SSI) is designed to assist hospitals with implementing processes to reduce SSIs and enhance the overall safety of surgical care. This is accomplished by educating unit-level staff and applying key principles that increase safety and prevent infections.
Goal:
To reduce SSIs for colon surgery, hip and knee replacement, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery, and hysterectomy by 20%.
Approach:
NYSPFP’s approach provides education on best practices for the entire team, including the adoption of the NYSPFP Advanced Colon Bundle, utilizing a safe surgery checklist, and implementing a "post-count" debrief with the full surgical team. NYSPFP has collaborated with nationally and internationally recognized organizations to provide tools and resources that hospitals can utilize in developing initiatives to reduce SSI and identifying and implementing best practices related to surgical safety.
