Surgical Site Infections

The Surgical Site Infection (SSI) Prevention Initiative is designed to assist hospitals to implement processes to reduce SSIs for colon surgery, hip and knee replacement, coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery and hysterectomy by 20% and enhance the overall safety of surgical care.

NYSPFP will support hospitals to reduce the SSI rate through implementation of best practices including:
  • Enhancing and embedding a culture of safety and teamwork in the OR, including:
o Implementing a safe surgery checklist
o Implementing a "post-count" debrief (with the surgical attending and full surgical team present) with a post anesthesia care unit discharge instructions component
  • NYSPFP Advanced Colon Bundle (note: many elements of the bundle have cross-surgery applicability to reduce SSIs)
o Pre-operative Mechanical Bowel Preparation with oral antibiotics
      o Normothermia
      o Glucose Control
      o Antimicrobial prophylaxis
      o Increased peri-operative oxygenation
      o Skin preparation
      o Clean standardized fascia close
      o Wound management
