Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections
The CAUTI Initiative is designed to assist hospitals to implement standardized processes for the identification and adoption of best practices to prevent CAUTIs.
The goals of the CAUTI Initiative are:
- To reduce unnecessary catheter utilization
- To eliminate preventable catheter-associated urinary tract infections
NYSPFP approach to CAUTI:
With guidance from the NYSPFP Infection Prevention Workgroup, the CAUTI Initiative will follow the collaborative methodology to rapidly advance improvements in urinary catheter utilization and management. Hospitals will assess existing urinary catheterization practices, and then implement the evidence-based CAUTI bundle. Specifically, hospitals will focus on appropriate indications for catheter use, and recommended guidelines for catheter insertion and maintenance. Hospital participants will also have the opportunity to learn from peers, sharing best practices and lessons learned through learning sessions and ongoing conference calls and webinars.
