NYSPFP PFE Webinar: Patient and Family Advisor Orientation

Thursday, November 8, 2018
1:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.
On Thursday, November 8, NYSPFP will host a webinar on best practices for orienting new patient and family advisors to serve on a hospital Patient and Family Advisory Committee/Council (PFAC). This webinar is in response to hospital requests for more direction on implementing and sustaining a successful PFAC; specifically, hospitals have requested additional support and tools for patient and family advisor orientation.

The webinar will feature Thomas Workman, PhD, senior advisor for patient and family engagement (PFE) at the American Institutes for Research, which is the PFE contractor for the national Partnership for Patients program through the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Dr. Workman will share tips with hospitals on how to prepare advisors for their very first PFAC meeting and incorporate feedback from advisors on how to improve hospital quality and patient safety initiatives.

Additionally, NYSPFP will be releasing Patient and Family Advisors Orientation Program, a new online educational module that focuses on the importance of being an advisor and provides tips on how to be a successful member of your hospital’s PFAC. The eLearning program was created by Dr. Workman and NYSPFP and will be available for hospitals to incorporate into their patient and family advisor orientation.

Dr. Workman is as an advisor and faculty in the NYSPFP PFAC eLearning. He has worked with hospitals and hospital networks nationally to implement programs that enable patients and families to partner with hospitals at all levels of care, and he has authored several articles and book chapters on PFE in healthcare.
