NYSPFP Unit-Based Safety Conference: Building Resilience Through Teamwork and Engagement

10/29/2018, 10/30/2018

NYSPFP will host two regional in-person conferences, in Syracuse and Manhattan, to support hospitals’ efforts to promote a strong unit-based safety culture. Expert speakers from Press Ganey Associates, Inc., Planetree International, and Adirondack Health will discuss developing high-performing, unit-based team teams through staff engagement, restoring joy in work, and building resilience.

Patient safety is a primary concern of all healthcare professionals, as evidenced by the results of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture (HSOPS). The need to foster team resilience is at an all-time high, as organizations face the challenges to swiftly and effectively understanding and mitigating the causes of burnout. Participants will receive practical tools for enriching their own resilience and the resilience of their teams. Proven best practices in communications, teamwork, and creating a psychologically safe environment will also be shared.

This conference’s learning objectives are to:
• Explore how unit-based care teams can better engage to build resiliency while providing a more reliable system within which clinicians and staff work and interact.
• Describe behaviors that raise staff engagement and restore joy in work.
• Outline hospital best practices, interventions, and challenges underway to assure staff feel meaning, choice, camaraderie, and effective teamwork.
• Provide tools to support the manager’s role in leading unit-based safety that promotes accountability and empowers a safe patient.

• Marty Wright, Director, Strategic Consulting, Press Ganey Associates, Inc.
• Linda McClarigan, MSHA, BSN, RN BS-NE, CNO and VP of Patient Care Services, Adirondack Health
• Jim Kinsey, Director of Member Experience, Planetree International
