NYSPFP Regional Conferences: Fall TIPS Collaborative

10/23/2018, 10/24/2018

NYSPFP is pleased to host two in-person events on the Fall TIPS (Tailoring Interventions for Patient Safety) Collaborative, one on October 23 in Syracuse and the other on October 24 in Manhattan. Patricia C. Dykes, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI, of Brigham and Women’s Hospital, will facilitate the conferences, which focuses on training hospital staff to serve as Fall TIPS implementation leaders at their respective facilities.

Hospitals considering formal enrollment in the Collaborative should send a full team of implementation leaders to one of the sessions. The conferences are open to all hospital staff, regardless of their role or intention to join the Collaborative.

This falls prevention methodology is the result of a multi-center research collaborative spanning three major institutions: Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Montefiore Health System, and NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP)/Columbia University Medical Center. The Fall TIPS Toolkit is an intervention that engages patients and families in its three-step fall prevention process:

1. Conducting fall risk assessments
2. Developing a tailored or personalized fall prevention plan
3. Implementing a consistent tailored fall prevention plan

Hospitals nationwide are now reducing their patient fall rates and improving outcomes with Fall TIPS, and this event will allow NYSPFP members to join the Collaborative or obtain additional information to utilize within their organizations. Participating facilities have seen a reduction of up to 25% in falls on units where the interventions were applied, compared to control units.

Note: NYSPFP hospitals that are planning to formally enroll in the falls Rapid-Cycle Improvement Program (RCIP) should attend one of these events. Please contact your Project Manager with any RCIP questions.

Dr. Dykes is Senior Nurse Scientist and Program Director for Research in the Center for Patient Safety Research and Practice and the Center for Nursing Excellence at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Dykes is the Principal Investigator of the AHRQ-funded project "Patient-Centered Fall Prevention."
