NYSPFP Sepsis Webinar: Interventions and Strategies to Prevent Sepsis Readmissions

Monday, September 17, 2018
11 a.m. - 12 p.m.
On September 17, NYSPFP will host its second statewide sepsis readmissions webinar. As a follow-up to the July 19 webinar, this event will focus on interventions and strategies to reduce readmissions after admission for sepsis. NYSPFP staff has been working on sepsis and readmissions with the Hospital Improvement Innovation Networks (HIIN) Affinity Groups, which are collaborations among the 16 national HIIN contractors to promote change and innovation to tackle the growing problem. The event will detail two main topics:

  • Identifying clear interventions for reducing sepsis readmission in potentially immunosuppressed patients

  • Sharing the results and lessons learned from the Sepsis and Readmission HIIN Affinity Group’s small national patient interview pilot project

Mark E. Mikkelsen, MD, MSCE, FCCM, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mikkelsen is an expert in critical care medicine with a specific focus on sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and post-intensive care syndrome. Through the lens of patients and their families, Dr. Mikkelsen conducts patient-oriented research on sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and long-term outcomes in survivors of critical illness. He also is Co-Chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's Thrive: Supporting Survivors of Critical Illness Initiative.

Nationally, sepsis diagnoses are a current leading cause of readmissions. NYSPFP has analyzed the most recent readmission data of participating hospitals and found that readmission after an index admission for sepsis accounts for more than 21% of all readmissions––or one in five readmissions. The data also shows an increased length of stay and higher mortality rates for this patient population.
