NYSPFP Sepsis Webinar: Exploring Sepsis Readmissions

Thursday, July 19, 2018
11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
On July 19, NYSPFP will host its first statewide webinar on sepsis readmissions. The webinar will explore multiple topics, including the continuum of care for patients with sepsis; strategies to reduce readmission after treatment for sepsis; evidence about sepsis survivors; and patient and family engagement for this specific patient population.

The session will feature Mark E. Mikkelsen, MD, MSCE, FCCM, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Mikkelsen is an expert in critical care medicine with a specific focus on sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and post-intensive care syndrome. Through the lens of the patient and their family, Dr. Mikkelsen conducts patient-oriented research on sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, and long-term outcomes in survivors of critical illness. He also serves as Co-Chair of the Society of Critical Care Medicine's Thrive: Supporting Survivors of Critical Illness Initiative.

Nationally, sepsis diagnoses are a current leading cause of readmissions. The increasing incidence of readmissions of sepsis survivors is an emerging area in patient safety that warrants exploration.

NYSPFP has analyzed the most recent readmission data of participating hospitals and found that readmission after an index admission for sepsis accounts for more than 21% of all readmissions––or one in five readmissions. The data also shows an increased length of stay and higher mortality rates for this patient population. NYSPFP staff has been working on sepsis and readmissions with the Hospital Improvement Innovation Networks (HIINs) Affinity Groups, which are collaborations among the 16 national HIIN contractors, to tackle this growing problem by promoting change and innovation.

This fall, NYSPFP will present another webinar to follow up on the status of sepsis readmissions in New York State and address strategies from other faculty experts in this area.
