NYSPFP Worker Safety/SPH Webinar: Buy-in Strategies at All Levels to Promote a Culture of Safe Patient Handling

Wednesday, January 24, 2018
2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
On January 24, NYSPFP will host a webinar on creating, building, and sustaining a culture of safe patient handling (SPH) that integrates both patient and worker safety through all levels of the organization––including the patient and family. Featured speaker Kelly Moed, MSN, RN-BC, CSPHP, will describe the journey of how NYSPFP member Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) assured both patient and employees engaged in safe practices through a top-down organizational commitment, an engaged SPH committee, ongoing education and retraining, and internal SPH champions.

Ms. Moed will also share strategies, challenges, and successes from her efforts with hospitals and national organizations to facilitate a culture that embraces effective SPH practices.

Topics will include:
  • Identification of key stakeholders who have the power to impact an SPH program
  • Strategies to achieve buy-in from all management, frontline staff, and patients and families
  • Examples of SPH interventions, barriers, and high-level successes facilities have achieved
  • How to train, educate, retrain, and assess competency as an ongoing SPH activity
  • Breeches in SPH practice and how to address them
  • Fostering a learning environment for after-action reviews

Ms. Moed is a registered professional nurse with more than 30 years of experience in hospital-based nursing and nursing education. For more than 10 years, she has been the co-chair of the SIUH SPH/Ergonomics Committee and has coordinated the staff’s SPH education and training. Ms. Moed has also served as an SPH Site Reviewer for the American Nurses Association’s Handle with Care Recognition Program and as a trainer for the New York State Zero Lift Task Force. In 2011, she received the New York State Zero Lift Task Force SPH Advocacy Award, and in 2015, she became an active member of the New York State Department of Health SPH Workgroup. Ms. Moed is currently the Education Workgroup Lead for the Universal Safe Patient Handling and Mobility Coalition and a Master Moderator for the coalition’s website, Mobility is Medicine.
