Thursday, July 14, 2016
2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.
NYSPFP is pleased to present the first of a three part series on "How to Create and Sustain a Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC) to Improve Patient Safety" featuring the experts from the American Institutes for Research (AIR), the CMS PFP Person and Family Engagement Contractor.

This webinar will provide an explanation of the key elements and goals of person and family engagement, reasons for and benefits of working with patient and family advisors, the importance of leadership buy-in and how to gain this support, and finally, discussion about how to identify opportunities for advisors within your organization. In this webinar, participants will learn:

• What patient and family advisors do and how they can help healthcare organizations improve quality and safety
• Overview of patient and family advisory councils including what they do, logistics, membership, structure, bylaws, etc.
• How to gain leadership buy-in and support for working with advisors
• How to prepare clinicians, leaders, and hospital staff to work effectively with advisors
• Options for ways in which healthcare organizations can work with advisors, ranging from less intensive activities such as working with advisors on short-term projects, to more involved activities such as working with advisors as members of quality and safety committees
• How to identify opportunities for and barriers to working with patient and family advisors in your organization

At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will be given a learning assignment to complete before the next webinar. The learning assignment will be to identify several issues within their organization that would benefit from patient input, brainstorm 2 to 3 ways in which their organization could begin working with advisors, and potential barriers and solutions. Participants will be asked to e-mail these to AIR [American Institute of Research] in advance of the next webinar.
