SSI/OR Safety Educational Webconference: Reducing Colorectal Surgical Site Infections Part II

Thursday, December 5, 2013
7:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m.
On December 5, NYSPFP will host an educational webinar on the reduction of colorectal surgical site infections (SSIs). Patchen Dellinger, M.D., Professor of Surgery at the University of Washington Medical Center, will provide attendees with an overview of how colon SSI reduction practices, such as glucose control, appropriate and timely antibiotic prophylaxis, and pre-operative screening, were incorporated into the workflow at his hospital. Dr. Dellinger will discuss the practical challenges encountered and provide tips on how to overcome barriers to enhance safety of surgical patients.

David. P. Calfee M.D., and Ghinwa Dumyati M.D., will also provide an overview of the changes in the National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) definitions of colon SSIs and discuss how the change in NHSN definition may have impacted the colon SSI rates in New York.
