NYSPFP Patient and Family Engagement Forum: Supporting the Safe Handoff of Care

Monday, November 18, 2013
9:30 a.m.–11:30 a.m.
GNYHA Conference Center
555 W. 57th Street, 15th Floor
NYSPFP is holding a regional in-person patient and family engagement (PFE) forum focused on nurse bedside shift reports as one strategy for hospitals to effectively involve patients and family members as partners in their care.

Pam Dardess, Principle Researcher for the Health Program at the American Institutes for Research, will provide an overview of the AHRQ Guide to Patient and Family Engagement. Particular attention will be paid to the rationale behind and step-by-step guidance for hospitals to implement nurse bedside shift reports, as one key strategy included in the AHRQ Guide. Specifically, attendees will learn about tools to support implementation, including bedside shift report checklists, tips for training nurses to conduct a bedside shift report, and how to involve patients and their families in the process from the start.

Members of the Stony Brook University Hospital team—Margaret Duffy, MS, RN, NEA-BC, Interim Chief Nursing Officer, and Roseanna Ryan, Director of Patient Advocacy, Patient and Family Centered Care, and Language Assistance Services—will present their experiences with implementing nurse bedside shift reports as part of this information sharing session. The PFE forum will also have time allotted for collective brainstorming about solutions to common challenges in this area.
