Project JOINTS: Pre-Operative Management to Prevent Surgical Site Infections after Orthopedic Surgery

On July 9, 2013 NYSPFP will host an educational webinar focused on the Institute for Health Care Improvement’s (IHI) Project JOINTS (Joining Organizations IN Tackling Surgical site infections [SSI]) so that hospitals in New York may learn about the application of its strategies. This national initiative was designed to spread evidence-based practices in the pre-operative phase of care including preadmission Staphylococcus aureus (SA) screening, treatment and prevention and using an alcohol containing antiseptic agent for preoperative skin preparation.

Deborah S. Yokoe, MD, MPH, Medical Director of the Infection Control Department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, will present on the evidence-based practices underlying Project JOINTS.

Lisa McDonald, BSN, RNFA, the Project Coordinator at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, a national Project JOINTS mentor hospital, will share her hospital’s experience of implementing the Project JOINTS’ recommended best practices.

Who Should Attend

NYSPFP encourages your hospital’s SSI/OR Safety Surgical Champions (including at a minimum, surgeon, anesthetist, OR nurse), orthopedic team and preadmission testing staff to participate. Quality improvement and patient safety staff and infection preventionists are also encouraged to participate.
